Anglo Platinum is the world's leading primary producer of platinum. It also
produces other platinum group metals (PGMs) in quantities determined by their
occurrence in the ores mined. In addition to platinum, PGMs comprise palladium,
rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium. Nickel, copper and other base metal
products are byproducts of PGM operations. Operations comprise 6 mines, 4 joint
ventures, 3 smelters, 17 concentrator plants, a base metals refinery and a
precious metals refinery.
Challenges
Anglo Platinum is focused on improving safety, optimizing their maintenance strategies and utilizing their maintenance resources effectively on the right jobs and maintenance activities that will improve safety, reduce downtime, increase production and reduce costs. Their traditional focus and solutions did not optimize the above issues to the extent possible with an enterprise wide RCM. In addition:
- Existing spreadsheets and databases were disconnected from SAP
- No method for sharing past studies, measuring study results and maintenance plan impacts, or keeping the maintenance strategies updated and evergreen
- No integration into SAP Plant Maintenance
- No tool or process to make Anglo's reliability efforts a living program
Why RCMO?
Anglo Platinum wanted to enhance their approach using the benefits of detailed RCM/FMEA analysis and recommendations and continual evaluation of maintenance strategy effectiveness. Anglo Platinum's reasons for choosing RCMO included:

RCMO Solution
RCMO is an SAP® xApps™ Certified solution. Through tight integration with SAP PM, RCMO provides the framework for defining maintenance strategies based upon SAE JA-1011 RCM and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) standards. RCMO also integrates recommendations from RCM analyses into Maintenance Plans in SAP and drives automated re-evaluation of maintenance strategies to ensure that the impact is constantly measured for continuous improvement.
Results
The Anglo Platinum team completed the technical installation of the RCMO
solution on their own, in a matter of days with only two weeks of configuration.
The organization only required one week of user training for the pilot site, so
the pilot site was able to use RCMO productively within a few weeks. Based on
the pilot project, Anglo anticipates:
- Increased safety performance at mining, smelting and refining operations.
- Reduction in critical equipment and production downtime
